Apple MagSafe: Everything About iPhone 12 Charging Tech

Apple launched the latest edition to their mobile selection in October; the iPhone 12 series. The sassy gadget offers some great features that have promised to make your life much easier and fun too. Amongst these features, the iPhone 12 series supports MagSafe. Many people may be familiar with this however to some, this is a completely foreign concept. Read on to find out the ins and outs of this “MagSafe” we speak of.

MagSafe Charger

What Is MagSafe?

MagSafe is nothing new. It was previously introduced in 2006 with the MacBook Pro but was phased out when the fourth-generation MacBook Pro was released. In early 2019, the final MacBook to use MagSafe was discontinued. The name “MagSafe” still refers to the style of magnet-based accessories, only this time it’s been designed for iPhones instead of MacBooks.

MagSafe is a battery booster that magnetically attaches to a device as opposed to the usual USB cable method. It uses magnets to help you align your iPhone on a wireless charger; which further guarantees a faster charging process of up to 15W for iPhone 12. The charger is designed to snap on and off devices, allowing an easy to connect charger that is safer for your gadget.

The MagSafe charger is faster than your traditional Qi-based charger, because of its magnetic properties as well as improved internal components. MagSafe will align with your battery using the magnetic attraction, which then boosts its power.

How Does MagSafe Work?

Before the magnetic feature was introduced on wireless chargers, there’d be instances where someone could leave their phone to charge, only to check it later and find that it hadn’t been charging. This would happen because the charger was not aligned with the battery.

Unlike ordinary wireless chargers, MagSafe’s greatest advantage is the magnetic technology. The new iPhone 12 models have magnets arranged in a circular shape inside of them. These allow for Apple’s MagSafe charger to snap right onto the back of them and begin charging.

Why MagSafe Is Good For iPhone Charging

The core function of MagSafe is to ensure that iPhones are properly aligned to their wireless charger. If that isn’t the case, the phone may not charge.

MagSafe for the iPhone is slightly different. It’s not only a fully wireless charger; but it also paves the way forward for an iPhone that doesn’t require a lightning port. This means that there’s more room inside the chassis for other things such as a larger battery.

This could also be the beginning of Apple moving away from wired charging, to completely wireless charging for the iPhone. In no time, we could witness a world where no charging ports even exist on the iPhone, potentially allowing Apple to introduce 100% waterproof cell phones.

Which Devices Could Work With A MagSafe Charger?

The MagSafe charger was specifically made for the iPhone 12 series, so that would be most ideal. Additionally, the MagSafe charger maintains compatibility with Qi charging, so it can also be used to wirelessly charge an iPhone 8 or any model after, as well as AirPods with a wireless charging case. Although it can work with other iPhone models, it’s important to note that because they have no magnetic features and the internal components, they could charge slower than required.

Unfortunately, for wearables like the Apple Watch, these devices don’t support MagSafe charging. For a more comprehensive list of Apple Magsafe compatible devices, see the full list of products here.

Magsafe Compatibility

At the other end of the spectrum, if you happen to be an Android user, then you’re in luck as Apple has ensured that the MagSafe charger supports such devices, in particluar, Samsung’s higher end smartphones like the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note range. According to MacWorld test results, despite the fact that the back is made of glass, the MagSafe charger attached surprisingly well to the S10 Plus.

Choosing The Right Power Adapter For The MagSafe Charger

The optimal power adapter you choose should have the USB-C port, and more than 20W output, such as Apple’s original 20W adapter. Apple’s latest 20W fast charger is able to charge your phone up to 50% in 30 minutes, and up to 100% in approximately 2 hours. There are plenty of third-party alternative chargers that support 20W or greater wattage fast charging.
