The Origins of Mother’s Day
It may surprise you, but the origin of Mother’s Day has quite a sad beginning.
In 1876, Anna Jarvis, movement leader of Mother’s day, overheard her mother’s prayer following a Sunday School lesson. In her prayer, Anna’s mother said, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will find a memorial Mother’s Day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life.” It was this prayer that Anna decided to go on to lead the Mother’s Day movement in the early 20th century. Then on May 10th, 1908, she sent 500 white carnations to her late mom in honor of her, which later became the first celebration of Mother’s Day.
It wasn’t until 1914, however, that President Woodrow Wilson signed the holiday into official existence. It proclaimed that the second Sunday of each May would be, “a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”
